WASD Custom Keyboard Favorites

Here’s some of my favorite WASD Keyboards! Click on the image for a larger view.

Awwww, I heart you too!

The space bar says “I love you more than words can express. Happy Anniversary Andrew.  -Caitlin”. If giving a custom mechanical switch keyboard to the one you love isn’t a sure sign of a healthy lasting and loving relationship, then I’ll just have to give up my fake relationship counseling degree!

This is a great use of the custom template option to place a couple images on the keyboard. Now you can get all your science testing done at an increased 12% efficiency! And there’s cake!

Keys this keyboard contains that I’m a great fan of:
“GREAT SCOTT!”
“88 MPH”
“I’m in SPACE!”
The always classic “ANY KEY”
And the Backspace with the words “TO THE FUTURE”

Are you a serious mech pilot? Yes? Are you sure? Do you have a keyboard like this one? No? Then you’re not nearly as serious as you thought you were. This lovely keyboard combines several nice techniques into a stunning keyboard. It has multiple key images, multiple images per key, a strong sense of color style, and a very consistent design. Except for the oddly unchanged “~” and “\” keys, this is one to be proud of!

Mostly black, a bit of rainbow. Boring? No! Click on the thumbnail to get the full image and you’ll revel in the amazing number of ways in which cute little ponies can prance about on a keyboard! This is a very consistently themed keyboard, with a lot of love put into its creation. It’s a shame that it’s on a black background though, since I know from my own experience the images will wear off rather quickly.

WASD Custom Keyboard Part II

I’ve had a lot of great feedback about my custom designed keyboard from WASD Keyboard both online and in person. Since the inspiration for my keyboard, ADOM, is getting a refresh Indigogo campaign, I thought now might be a great time to revisit things.

First of all, how does the keyboard wear over time? Here’s what it looked like when it was new:

And here’s what it looks like now:

Clearly my lighting is not optimal, but the important thing to notice is that the frequently used black keys are fading out. Especially noticeable on the shift and enter keys, the images are on their way to disappearing entirely. This in sharp contrast to the rest of the colors, all of which are still vibrant and sharp, including the home row keys.

My theory is that due to the burning process, the black keys are not scorched as deeply as the rest of the colors and therefor it doesn’t take much physical wear to remove the images. Advice: don’t use black for keys you’ll use a lot.

As far as the mechanical aspects go, this keyboard has held up really well! It’s as smooth and fun to use as the day I got it in the mail, and I suspect it will be for a long time to come.

Custom Keyboard!!!!

Oh man, am I one happy nerd camper!

After much research into what made good keyboards great, I decided I wanted one with Cherry MX Brown switches. They offer the tactile feedback that I want without as much noise as the old M style keyboards.

With that decided, the next step was to decide where I was going to get the keyboard itself from. There are many retailers that offer keyboards with Cherry MX switches in them, but most of them use the same manufacturer for the internals. There’s nothing wrong with that, the internals are solid, but it means that quality of the internals isn’t really a factor in the decision.
